How To Introduce Your Puppy to Cats, Dogs and People
Many years ago, I was co-hosting a growly dog class (which is where dogs who turn into wild beasts whenever they see another dog or a stranger, go to learn that other dogs and people are actually really awesome) and I made such a rookie mistake I berated myself for months afterwards.
There I was, in a GROWLY DOG CLASS, working with GROWLY DOGS, and I just automatically reached down to pat a little fluffy dog on the head!
I was swiftly reminded of why that was the dumbest thing to do EVER and fortunately, the dog who told me off only snapped at me and didn’t go for a full-scale hand bite. Man, I felt like such an idiot!
But it’s so easy to do, isn’t it?
You see something cute and fluffy and you’re mesmerized and it’s almost impossible to refrain.
But sometimes you need to refrain and sometimes you’ll need to teach a friend or stranger to hold back and behave appropriately before meeting your dog.
Your puppy may not have met many people in their short life.
Now that things are opening up again in some places after various degrees of Covid-19 lockdown, we need to gently introduce your puppy to new people so they learn that meeting new people is a good thing.
Depending on whether your puppy is keen to bounce all over new people or hide until they leave, the steps you take will vary, but either way, you’ll need to slowly introduce your puppy to new people, while keeping your puppy’s comfort level in mind.
In my latest video, I teach you how to introduce your puppy to new visitors.
In this video, you’ll also learn how I manage multi-pet households.
Whether you have an older dog or a couple of cats, it’s important to slowly introduce them to your new puppy so everyone feels safe.
As with all puppy training, it’s a process, but if you take it nice and slow, you’ll have the whole family piled up in front of the fireplace by winter.
Do you find that puppy parenting is proving to be more challenging than you anticipated?
Is your adorable bundle of fluff acting like a bit of a maniac at times?
Are they:
· Refusing to sleep in?
· Jumping up on you?
· Destroying all your favourite things?
· Chewing your hands, feet, and clothes?
· Peeing and pooping all over your house?
