How being organized will help you raise a calm dog
If you’re just about to bring a new dog home, getting organized will make your puppy-raising much easier.
You’ll be able to approach everything methodically and this will reduce feelings of overwhelm.
You’ll be calm so your new dog will be calm.
You’ll need to create time in your schedule to:
Puppy proof your home
Research and get the right equipment
Create a safe zone to put your puppy when you can’t supervise them
Train your dog
I always encourage my clients to remove things from their busy schedules before adding things to their schedule.
If you’re really stressed, chances are that stress will rub off on your dog. They’ll be more frantic and this will end up causing you more stress!
With each of the tasks below, break them into tiny tasks, assign a timeframe to them and add them to your schedule.
Puppy proof your home
Add puppy proofing time to your schedule.
You’ll need to check that there aren’t any hazards inside and outside your home.
Think about it from a curious pup’s perspective – you know not to chew on an electrical cord or eat pest bait, but will they?
Research and purchase the right equipment
Putting constraint around your equipment research ensures you won’t go down a rabbit hole that results in overwhelm and over-purchasing.
Schedule in time to research and purchase the equipment you’ll need to make your puppy-raising life easier.

Create a safe zone to put your puppy when you can’t supervise them
In general, the equipment you purchase shouldn’t be hard to assemble, but you’ll still need to add time to your schedule to get your pup’s safe zone set up.
Having a safe zone to put pup while you’re busy means they won’t get into mischief, peeing and pooping all over your house and destroying your precious things.
Train your dog.
Start by picking a trainer.
You don’t need to know all the theory and hear all the opinions, just pick a trainer who will teach you how to raise a dog without causing them (or you) pain.

Add training time to your schedule.
You’ll need to break down each training command into small steps and add multiple training sessions to your weekly schedule so you make progress.
Once you have everything organized, you can relax and be in a calm state when you’re welcoming your dog into your home and when you’re teaching them how to behave.
